There’s music everywhere. Money? Not so much.

In these tech-savvy, DIY times, the spectrum of a band’s economic options has widened to include more ways of doing business. Bands can write, record, distribute, and market music globally for next to nothing. If you’ve got the hooks, the Internet can make you a big fish fast. But that doesn’t necessarily translate to more dollars. In fact, if anything, it’s become even harder for bands to make a living.

As Jack London Square and Uptown become more popular destinations for drinking, dining, and entertainment, a new City service will soon link the two districts with a free, weekday shuttle running down Broadway between the waterfront and Grand Avenue.
As Jack London Square and Uptown become more popular destinations for drinking, dining, and entertainment, a new City service will link the two districts with a free, weekday shuttle running down Broadway between the waterfront and Grand Avenue.

The Broadway Shuttle is expected to begin early next year, and comes as Jack London Square seeks to become a regional culinary destination on a par with the Ferry Building in San Francisco or Pikes Place Market in Seattle. A $1 million grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District combined with $200,000 from Jack London Square Partners and $160,000 from downtown area redevelopment funds will pay for most of the shuttle’s first two years of operation.

Express Launches a New Beer and Live Music Venue

The East Bay Express is sticking its toe into the beer and entertainment business with the launch of EBX Bleeding Heart Lager and Club X. In keeping with the newspaper’s commitment to localism, the beer is brewed a few blocks from the Express’ office, and the 500-capacity club is conveniently located downstairs from the paper’s headquarters.

For the fourth year in a row, the Laurel Village Association is coordinating a Summer Solstice Music Festival on June 20, 2009. Amateur and professional musicians perform for free in unconventional public spaces such as street corners, merchant parking lots, and residential driveways. Join us at numerous sites along MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland’s Laurel neighborhood from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. on June 20th!
